EDDY / PANDA traces recorded panda movements across borders, and the people and institutions around them. It is an independent editorial project, not a live animal census.

A sourced birth introduces a small dot beside its recorded family. Its glow grows symbolically over four timeline years and its light column over ten. These are not body measurements; individuals without a recorded birth use a fixed decorative light. Family neighbours show kinship, not shared enclosures. Scattered positions and light heights are decorative, not precise locations or measurements. Births and journeys receive more screen time. Overseas-born cubs can travel to China for the first time even when a source calls the move a return.

How to read the map

Choose a panda to follow its recorded chapters, or choose all pandas for the wider archive. The timeline moves continuously; chapters appear at their recorded dates. A line remains as a historical trace, not proof of a current home. Red routes lead from China; blue routes lead to China.

Curves connect an origin and a destination, not actual flight paths. Destination markers approximate zoo locations. China uses a representative country-level point: the starting or receiving facility is not established for every record. The land texture is decorative.

Each red dot represents one named panda at its last recorded journey’s destination. Two pandas make two dots. A return moves their dots back to China without erasing their earlier route. The brief movement animation illustrates a recorded change of destination, not actual flight time or position. Reduced-motion settings show the destination immediately. Dots disappear after a recorded death. Where both departure and arrival dates are known, dots are hidden in transit and reappear on arrival. The archive remains incomplete; dots are not a verified census. Departure dates do not establish an exact arrival time. New dots mean newly represented individuals, not necessarily births. Select a dot to open that panda’s chapter.

What is—and is not—here

These 29 records are a first selection, not a complete history. Dates retain the precision of the cited source. Month-only or year-only records appear at the end of that period; the slider does not establish a more precise event date. The timeline between chapters does not infer journeys or whereabouts. Chapter counts describe records; red-dot counts describe only the individuals currently shown from this incomplete collection, not a country’s total panda population. The archive does not assign a friendship score or infer political causes.
